Cemeteries and crematoriums

The Council is responsible for three cemeteries and four closed churchyards.

We run an Adopt a Grave scheme so that unvisited graves are cared for - see below for more information.

We also operate West Herts Crematorium and Hemel Hempstead Crematorium in conjunction with four neighbouring councils.

Cemeteries

Below is a list of the cemeteries that we manage.

There are Gardens of Rest for cremated remains at each of the cemeteries.

Cemetery opening times throughout the year including public holidays:

March to October 8am to 7pm
November to February 8am to 4pm

Parking in the cemeteries Toggle accordion

Parking is permitted in the cemeteries when visiting graves, the cemetery office or attending a funeral but not for other purposes. The speed limit within cemeteries is 5mph. 

Please note that at Hatfield Road Cemetery parking is no longer permitted on the main avenue leading to the Cenotaph. Double yellow lines show the areas of restricted parking and any vehicle found parking in the restricted areas may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice. Parking for cemetery visitors can be found on the three roads off the Cenotaph. 
 

Closed churchyards 

These churchyards are closed for future burials, but the Council continues to maintain the grounds within them. The churchyards are:

Adopt a Grave scheme

We run an adopt a grave scheme to help take care of neglected graves by weeding, planting flowers or washing the memorial.

To apply to adopt a grave, download and complete the application form.

Cemeteries Office

Our office operates by appointment only. Please contact us by email cemeteries@stalbans.gov.uk or call 01727 819362 and leave a voicemail to book an appointment.

Appointments are available Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm.

The office is in Hatfield Road Cemetery, please call or email first as this office is not staffed at all times.
