Electric vehicle cross-pavement charging cable licence scheme
Cross-pavement charging
In partnership with Hertfordshire
County Council, St Albans City and District Council are trialling an electric vehicle cross-pavement charging scheme.
If your home doesn't have off-street parking, a cross-pavement channel would allow you to charge your electric vehicle (EV) without trailing a charging cable across the pavement. It is an enclosed channel inserted into the pavement, from the end of your property to the end of the kerb.
Eligibility
- The house must be in St Albans (with a postcode beginning AL1, AL2, AL3, AL4 or AL5)
- There are a series of additional criteria that the proposed cross-pavement channel must meet. For further details, see: www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/crosspavementchannel
- You will need planning permission for the EV charging point, see below
Planning permission
Before applying for planning permission for the EV charging unit: prospective applicants are required to apply for and receive ‘approval in principle’ from the Hertfordshire County Council for the cross-pavement channel. See www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/crosspavementchannel
- Properties with no off-street parking: in this case, planning permission is required for the installation of a home charging unit. In most cases, this would require a Householder application. To read about the validation requirements for a Householder planning application see: Application forms and validation checklists. The planning application documents must include evidence that 'approval in principle' has been received.
- Listed properties: if your property is listed you will also need to secure Listed Building Consent for the installation of the EV charger. See Application forms and validation checklists.
Next steps
If planning permission is granted for the EV Charging Point, you will need to send this to Hertfordshire County Council in order for the works to the channel to be carried out.
Before Hertfordshire County Council will install a channel, they will ask for evidence of this planning permission.
